The convertible – who it suits and what formats exist
A convertible is a car with a folding roof that can be fully opened or closed. The roadster is a separate subclass. It is usually a two-seat sports car with a soft top, built around handling and driving pleasure. A classic convertible more often has four seats, a larger boot and is designed for comfortable journeys rather than track-day thrills alone. Both types deliver a sense of freedom, but the roadster is more of a weekend toy, while a full convertible can serve as everyday transport too.
Soft top vs hardtop: pros and cons
If you want to buy a convertible, bear in mind that a soft top (fabric or a vinyl concertina) is lighter and folds away faster. But it insulates worse against noise, cold and rain – the seals harden over time, the seams can let water through, and in winter the fabric freezes. A convertible with a hardtop uses metal or composite panels. They stow in the boot or are removed by hand. Unlike soft-top convertibles, the sealing here is almost as good as a normal saloon: warm, quiet and leak-free. Winter use is entirely realistic. The downsides are higher electronics repair costs and less boot space with the roof down.

A convertible in Ukraine is usually bought as a second car for fun. What counts is the emotion behind the wheel and the looks. But as your only car, a convertible for the city and travel demands compromises: the boot is usually smaller (especially with the roof down), comfort drops in rain and snow, and security becomes an issue (a soft top is easy to cut). How to choose and buy a used convertible in 5 steps (and not regret it)
To choose a used convertible, work through the following steps: 1. Set your budget. On top of the price of the convertible, allow 10-15 % for the first inspection, possible roof and seal repairs, an oil change and brake pads. 2. Pick a model year. Newer cars (under 5 years old) have fewer problems with roof electronics. For cars over 10 years old you need to check the convertible roof and the state of the body. 3. Roof type. A soft top is more affordable but more demanding to look after. A hardtop costs more to repair but works all year round. 4. Engine and gearbox. For the city, 1.6-2.0 l with an automatic will do; for the motorway, 2.5+ with a manual or an automated manual. 5. Drivetrain. Front-wheel drive is more economical, rear-wheel drive sportier, all-wheel drive suits regions with difficult roads. Check the VIN history, the mileage, any accident record and the service book. A used convertible that has been in a crash often has distorted geometry, which leads to leaks. Bear in mind that the price of a convertible in Ukraine depends on its condition.
