Who should buy a diesel and when it is genuinely worthwhile

A diesel car is above all about torque and fuel economy. But those advantages do not always apply: the benefit depends directly on how and how much you drive. If your annual mileage exceeds 20,000-25,000 km and your routes are mostly motorway, a diesel pays for itself through lower consumption. If the diesel sits in the city and the trips are short, the fuel saving can be swallowed by maintenance costs.

For the motorway and high mileage

This is where a diesel engine shows its full worth. At motorway speeds the engine runs in its optimal range, fuel consumption is minimal, and the torque gives confident overtaking even with a loaded boot. If you want to buy a diesel car for long distances, pay attention to: 1. The turbo's condition – it should build boost smoothly, with no odd whistles or flat spots. 2. Fuel quality matters: fill up at trusted stations so you do not face an expensive injector repair. 3. Regular oil and filter changes on schedule are even more critical for a diesel than for a petrol engine. Check the service history. The more thoroughly the maintenance is documented, the fewer surprises await you after the purchase.

For the city and short trips: the possible downsides

A diesel in the city is not a death sentence, but there are nuances worth knowing in advance. Short 5-10 km trips do not let the engine warm through properly. The particulate filter (DPF) suffers as a result: it never completes a regeneration cycle and clogs over time. The outcome is warning lights, lost power and sometimes an expensive replacement. Another point is condensation in the exhaust and lubrication systems when the engine is repeatedly under-warmed. This is not a catastrophe, but it shortens the life of certain components. If your daily route is mostly city driving over short distances, work out whether a diesel really will be cheaper in the end.
