Hybrid cars in Ukraine – listings in the Imperiya Auto catalogue

People often want to buy a hybrid while confusing the terms. In fact it is a car with two sources of drive: an internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric motor. There are three types of hybrid car in Ukraine: HEV, PHEV and the pure electric car.
HEV – the conventional hybrid: how it works and who benefits
An HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is the classic hybrid, in which a small traction battery is charged solely by regeneration under braking and by the engine. There is no need to plug the car in – the system works on its own. A hybrid of this type is worth buying to save money in the city. In traffic and with frequent stops the electric motor takes on part of the load, cutting fuel consumption by 15-30 % compared with an equivalent petrol car. No charging station is needed and the driver's habits do not change: fill up at the pump, drive as usual, keep to the standard service schedule plus periodic hybrid system checks. A used HEV can be bought for noticeably less than a PHEV or an electric car of the same mileage and year. Mass production of these cars started back in 1997 with the Toyota Prius, so parts and servicing are available throughout Ukraine.
PHEV – the plug-in hybrid: when it makes sense
A PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is a plug-in hybrid with a larger battery that can be charged from a domestic socket or a charging station. On a full charge the car covers 30-80 km on electricity alone, after which it works like a conventional hybrid. Buying a PHEV really does pay off if your daily route is shorter than the electric range and you can charge at home or at work (a garage with a socket, a parking space with a wallbox). Comparing HEV with PHEV, bear in mind that if there is nowhere to charge the car, a plug-in hybrid turns into a heavy conventional hybrid with higher consumption. So assess the charging infrastructure nearby before you buy.

Hybrid vs electric car: a short comparison
So should you buy a hybrid or an electric car? Both options have their place. It all depends on your routes, your budget and your readiness to change. If you have no reliable charging or regularly drive long distances, a hybrid is more comfortable. If your daily trips are short and charging is at hand, an electric car may work out better in the long run. The price of an electric car and of a hybrid also differ. An EV costs more, which is worth factoring into your plans.
How to choose a new or used hybrid for your scenario: city, motorway, family
Hybrid cars are not a uniform category. The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and the Honda Jazz Hybrid solve completely different problems. Before you open the filters, define how you will use the car. This will save time and help you find a new or used hybrid that genuinely pays for itself. Consider the following: 1. City and traffic – this is where a hybrid shows its full worth. The electric motor works hard at low speeds, and in congestion consumption can fall to 4-5 l/100 km even in a crossover. If 80 % of your mileage is urban, an HEV will repay itself faster than any other type. 2. Motorway and long journeys – at a steady 100-120 km/h the hybrid's advantage shrinks, because the electric motor engages less often. Look at overall consumption, comfort, sound insulation and range rather than just the hybrid badge. 3. Family – body style, rear-row space, boot capacity and safety ratings come first. In hybrid SUVs and estates the battery sometimes eats into the boot (check this before buying). Bear in mind that a used hybrid is not the same as an ordinary combustion car, so the checks required are specific. Extra items relate to the high-voltage battery, the inverter and the electrics.
