4x4 or rear-wheel drive: what you actually need
A 4x4 pickup sounds appealing, but all-wheel drive is extra weight. That design means higher fuel consumption and higher servicing costs. Before you tick that filter, be honest about how the vehicle will be used. A rear-wheel-drive pickup is worth buying if it will mostly drive in town and on the motorway, and the roads in your region are surfaced and cleared in winter. This option is better if the priority is a lower purchase price and cheaper servicing. A pickup with all-wheel drive (4x4) is needed when you plan regular trips onto dirt tracks, fields and rough terrain, when winter use on uncleared roads is expected, or in mountainous areas. It is a good solution for hauling loads in difficult conditions (wet clay, sand, a steep climb). An all-wheel-drive pickup costs more, both to buy and to maintain. But if you leave the tarmac every week, that expense repays itself in peace of mind and capability.

A diesel engine's low-end torque is noticeably better, and motorway consumption under load runs from 8 to 11 l/100 km for 2.4-3.0 l engines. Set your maximum figure and subtract 10-15 % from it for registration, insurance, inspection and the first service. 2. Decide how many seats you need every day. For work, a single- or extended-cab pickup is the one to buy. For a family, a double cab. 3. All-wheel (4x4) or rear-wheel drive – base this on your real routes, not on wanting it just in case. 4. Buy a diesel pickup for torque and long hauls, petrol for the city and simple servicing. 5. A manual gearbox is cheaper and more reliable off-road. An automatic is more convenient in town and in traffic. 6. The newer the pickup, the lower the risk of chassis, electronics and general wear issues.
